The Truth About the Abortion Pill: New Study Reveals 1 in 10 Women Are Harmed

A powerful new study has confirmed what we’ve long known at ThriVe Savannah: the abortion pill is not safe for women.

The Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) recently published an analysis of insurance claims data from over 865,000 women between 2017 and 2023. Their findings were sobering: 10.9% of women experienced serious adverse events after taking the abortion pill—22 times higher than the 0.5% rate reported by the FDA.

These complications included:

  • Hemorrhaging

  • Sepsis

  • Infection

  • Emergency surgery

  • Hospitalization

This isn't just a health crisis—it’s a moral one. Women are being told that chemical abortion is “safe, simple, and empowering.” But in reality, it often leaves them physically vulnerable and emotionally isolated. With pills now distributed through the mail or via telehealth—often without any in-person medical oversight—the risks are growing. And the silence surrounding these dangers is deafening.

There Is Hope—Even After Taking the Pill

Many women experience regret immediately after taking the first abortion pill. Thanks to Abortion Pill Reversal, there is hope.

Through Heartbeat International’s Abortion Pill Rescue Network, there is a 72-hour window during which a woman may be able to reverse the effects of the pill and save her baby. Over 5,000 babies have been saved through this protocol—and ThriVe Savannah is proud to be part of this life-saving network.

If a woman reaches out in time, we can connect her with a medical provider to begin the reversal process—at no cost. Because of the generosity of our donors, women in our community have access to compassionate medical care and a second chance at life—for themselves and their babies.
